Wamena, Jubi – Regarding the planned ratification of three New Autonomous Regions (DOB) bills into law on Thursday, June 30, 2022, the Jayawijaya Police has prepared hundreds of joint security personnel to secure the agenda.
Jayawijaya Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Muh. Safe’i said there was an additional 300 personnel from the National Police Mobile Brigade (Brimob) unit to secure the Jayawijaya area on Thursday.
“From the Jayawijaya Police itself, for every protest, we prepare approximately 187 personnel. We also ask one company from the Indonesian Military (TNI),” said Safe’i after the deployment of troops on Wednesday in front of the Wamena Cross Monument.
He also said that the local government has given instructions to each of its staff at the district and village levels, to always provide information to the community to avoid turmoil.
According to Safe’i, so far the situation ahead of the ratification of the new Papua provinces bills was still conducive. He expected community activities to continue as usual as the police had carried out routine patrols to prevent unwanted things from occurring.
“Hopefully, the situation will stay under control in the future. This is a policy from the central government and the provincial government has also provided political support to these new autonomous regions, so it is hoped that the public listen to their leaders,” he said.
Regiment II Rayon Commander of the Mobile Brigade Pioneer Corps Adj. Sr. Comr. Alex Tobing confirmed that 300 personnel were sent from National Police Headquarters to Jayawijaya to assist the Jayawijaya Police.
“This addition of forces aims to provide a sense of comfort and security in the community, especially in Jayawijaya,” he said.
Meanwhile, Jayawijaya Regional Legislative Council (DPRD) speaker Matias Tabuni said that the new autonomous region was not a regional authority but the decision of the Central Government and the House of Representatives.
“Whatever the decision, like it or not, we must follow it. Indeed, many people reject the plan but in the end, it is not proposed by us regional government so we do not have any authority. Our obligation is only to convey people’s rejection of new autonomous regions to the province and the central government according to the mechanism,” he said. (*)
