Merauke, Jubi — The South Papua Provincial Transportation Agency is highlighting the importance of transport safety as part of National Transportation Day, or Harhubnas, 2026.
Safety awareness is one of the agency’s main priorities during this year’s Harhubnas celebrations in South Papua.
Head of the South Papua Transportation Agency, Michael Ronny Gomar, said Harhubnas should not be treated as merely a ceremonial event, but should instead be used as an opportunity to improve the quality of transport services and raise public awareness about safety.
According to Gomar, safety is a shared responsibility among all transport stakeholders, including government authorities, operators and members of the public who use transport services.
“Transport is the lifeblood that supports economic growth, more equitable development and accelerated development in South Papua. Therefore, safety must be a shared priority,” Gomar said on Wednesday (2 September 2026).
To reinforce the message, the South Papua Transportation Agency is coordinating with various transport stakeholders to organise a series of activities for Harhubnas 2026.
The coordination involves the Indonesian military and police, government agencies, transport operators and associations representing the air, sea and land transport sectors.
Several activities are planned as part of the 2026 Harhubnas celebrations, including a transport safety campaign, blood donation drive, social visits and a short-video competition focused on transport safety.
Gomar said the involvement of various stakeholders should extend beyond the commemorative events and help strengthen cooperation to improve transport services and safety across South Papua.
“Harhubnas should be a moment to strengthen our shared commitment to building a transport system that is safe, orderly and provides the best possible service to the community,” he said.
Meanwhile, the head of the Merauke Region X Airport Authority, Charles Rory, said the series of activities would begin on 12 September 2026.
The activities will include the OTBAN Run, a community walk, a health exercise session and a safety campaign.
The OTBAN Run is planned as a 10-kilometre race, with about 250 participants expected. The community walk will cover approximately three to five kilometres and will be open to the public.
The safety campaign will also target road users, promoting the importance of wearing helmets, obeying traffic signs and following safety regulations while driving.
The main Harhubnas 2026 commemoration in South Papua is scheduled for 17 September 2026, with a flag-raising ceremony at the South Papua Governor’s Office.
South Papua Governor Apolo Safanpo is scheduled to serve as the ceremony’s inspector. (*)
