Deiyai, 8/3 (Jubi) – Coalition of women legislative candidates held a demonstration at the office of Deiyai Elections Commission (KPU Deiyai) on Friday (7/3) to convey their resistance against the binding system in the legislative election.
Field coordinator, Elisabet Bukega said that they came to the commission office to inquire women quota in legislative election.
“We demanded KPU Deiyai to accommodate women seats. We strongly refused the binding system as it will ignore our rights, “said Elisabet Bukega in front of KPU office in Wakeitei, Tigi district, Deiyai on Friday (7/3).
She further explained that based on the number of voters list (DPT), specially the total number of women in district is about twenty-three thousand voters. It means that quota for women is available in the legislative seats.
“We’ll keep working on making women’s voices to be accommodated,” she said.
He added, KPU does not need to shift women’s votes to men. “Women can also be a legislator,” she stressed.
Meanwhile, a commissioner, Ice Giyai, said members of the Commission have no right to reduce and shift the votes to others. KPU will certainly focus on the most votes from the field.
“Principally, whoever has most votes, will be a member of the legislative council,” she said. (Jubi / HOM/ Tina)
