Floods and landslides in Sorong City, govt to declare disaster emergency

Sorong, Jubi TV – Due to heavy rains from Monday, August 22, 2022, until Tuesday morning, a landslide claimed two lives in Sorong City, West Papua Province. In addition, a total of two people were injured and two houses were severely damaged in the incident, according to the Sorong City Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD).

Sorong City BPBD head Herlin Sasabone said on Tuesday that the landslide killed two people, injured one person, and damaged one house in the Pal Putih Subdistrict. The damaged house is on Rufei Tanjung Batu Street.

Further, Herlin added, landslides also caused one person injured and one house heavily damaged in the Puncak Cenderawasih Subdistrict. The damaged house is located on Kasim Island Street.

Herlin said the Sorong City BPBD was coordinating with the Search and Rescue team, the police, and the Indonesian Military (TNI) to deal with the impact of floods and landslides that occurred in parts of Sorong City.

“BPBD has not yet opened an emergency response post but we are on standby to receive public complaints,” she said, as quoted by Antara.

According to her, the Sorong City Administration will soon declare a disaster emergency status following the floods and landslides that occurred in the region.

She said the administration was still waiting for the Sorong City mayor to sign the decree regarding the determination of the disaster emergency status. The mayor was only recently inaugurated on Tuesday. (*)
