Jayapura, Jubi – The winner of four gold medals at the Sea Games 2011 in Palembang, Franklyn Burumi, will represent Papua in the National Games XIX 2016 in West Java after he couldnít win a gold medal at the last National Games in Riau.
He has now joined other Papuan athletes in a training center in Jakarta.
In the last National Games in Riau, he failed to win a gold medal due to a knee injury he had in a traffic accident, a senior athletic trainer Marthen Iwanggin said.
“He is fine, but now is still recovering. I think he will fully recover. Discipline is the key. He must do a lot of exercise, get some good rest, and avoid doing things that might be harm himself,” Iwanggin told Jubi at Papua KONI Office in Jayapura on Wednesday (8/10).
Another trainer argued the athleteís participation in the training center is too much driven by his fame.
“He was forced to join the team because of his name and his youth. He was forced to compete in Palembang and he failed,” said the former Papuan sprinter, Wilem Ayomi.
Another former sprinter, Silas Patay, also hoped the Provincial Government and Papua PASI (Athletic Association) would not force Burumi to participate in the National Games.
“I don’t he’s ready to compete because he would still in limp. His tendon was strained, not just typical muscles,” he said.
At the 2011 Sea Games 2011 in Palembang, Burumi won four gold medals in 100 meters sprint, 200 meters sprint, 4 x 100 meters relay and 400 meters.
