Jayapura, 13/5 (Jubi) – Persipura Jayapura reached the quarterfinals of AFC Cup after trashing Yangon United of Myanmar 9-2 in the elimination round on Tuesday (13/5) at the Mandala Stadium Jayapura.
Liberian striker Boakay Edi Fokay scored five goals for the home team, with Ian Kabes, Tinus Pae and Titus Bonay netted one each, Caesar Augusto and Kyaw Ko Ko found the back of the net for Yangon United.
Persipura’s team played an offensive game from the kick-off, spearheaded by Ruben Sanadi and Ian Kabes in the midfield. Foday scored the opener two minutes into the game and Tinus Pae doubled the score seven minutes later.
Leading with two goals made Persipura rest on its laurels. The Yangon United took advantage of Persipura’s complacency and 22 minutes into the game United managed to level the score 2-2.
Taken by surprise, Persipura intensified attacking and in the 27th minute, the referee awarded a penalty for the Black Pearls and sent off Yangon’ Aung Thaik for a handball. Kabes made no mistake and Persipura was in the lead again.
