Jayapura, Jubi – The United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP) is deeply saddened to see the terrible effects of Cyclone Winston on our dear Melanesian family members in the Republic of Fiji. On behalf of the people of West Papua we would like to convey our deepest sympathy and condolences to all those who have been affected by this terrible cyclone which has already taken the lives of many people.
In view of this terrible natural disaster in the region, ULMWP is setting up a Cyclone Appeal to help with humanitarian aid and assistance to the people of the Republic of Fiji.
Speaking today, ULMWP Spokesperson, Benny Wenda said “No matter what happens, we West Papuans will always be your fellow Melanesian brothers and sisters and will always stand in solidarity with our Fijian family members. Nothing can break the bonds of Melanesian solidarity and we always remember the incredible and heartfelt support shown by people right across Fiji for our freedom.”
Benny Wenda went onto say, “Today, we are launching a Cyclone Appeal for those suffering in Fiji who so urgently need the help and solidarity of others around the world. The people of Fiji are true Melanesian and Pacific Islander brothers and sisters to the people of West Papua and have always helped my people in our time of need. Now it is their time of need and we urge everyone to please help in any way you can such as through fundraising and donating; in order to help with humanitarian aid to help the people of Fiji recover from this terrible event. We hope that people will donate generously to this appeal and help to support the people of Fiji in any way they can.
On behalf of the United Liberation Movement for West Papua, and thereby the people of West Papua, ULMWP offers the strongest Melanesian solidarity and prayers for our Melanesian family members in the Republic of Fiji.
We, the people of West Papua are always with you.
