Jayapura, 30/1 (Jubi) – President of Gereja Injil in Indonesia (GIDI), Rev. Dorman Wandikbo, firmly responded the statement of Deputy Chief of Police Papua, Paulus Waterpau, to ask death sentence to the alleged perpetor of violence in Puncak Jaya, Yemiter Telenggen.
“Speaking about death sentence, I would like to ask, whether the struggle of Free Papua is terrorism? They did not kill eight people, they just seized eight weapons. Death penalty, how come?” Wandikbo said to tabloidjubi.com at the Central Office of GIDI, Sentani, Jayapura District, Papua, Thursday (30/1).
Free Papua struggle, according to Dorman, was not terrorism, not a crime but the struggle to ask for the basic right of Papuans,” Dorman Wandikbo said. “Papua Independence is the basic right of Papuans,” he further said.
“Papuans ask their independence not because of the suffering, hunger or poverty, but want to be separated because of the ideology, that’s what we must understand,” he said.
Therefore, according to him, the suspect, Yemiter Talenggen, does not reserved to sentence a death penalty. Moreover, his involvement in the violence as well as the gun ownership has not yet proven. And if it is proven, he cannot put to death if speaking the Religious teachings.
