Jayapura, Jubi – Families of victims of the murder and mutilation of four Nduga residents in Mimika Regency asked that the perpetrators be given death sentences. The request was conveyed by representatives of the families when they met the commander of Oditurat IV-20 Jayapura Military Command, Col. Yunus Ginting, and the Papua Office of National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) in Jayapura City on Wednesday, October 12, 2022.

Family member Pale Gwijangge said all four families of the mutilation victims had agreed that the perpetrators should be punished according to their actions, therefore the death penalty.

“It was a gross human rights violation. The legal process must be able to provide a sense of justice for the families of victims who have lost their children, fathers, and grandchildren. The international community is also watching,” said Gwijangge.

The murder and mutilation occurred in Settlement Unit 1, Mimika Baru District on August 22, 2022. The four victims were Arnold Lokbere, Irian Nirigi, Leman Nirigi, and Atis Tini.

The XVII/Cenderawasih Military Police has named six soldiers of the Raider 20/Ima Jaya Keramo Infantry Brigade as suspects in the case, namely Maj. Hf, Capt. Dk, Chief Pvt. Pr, First Pvt. Ras, First Pvt. Pc, and First Pvt. R. Meanwhile, the Papua Police named four civilians as suspects, namely APL or Jack, DU, R, and RMH.

Gwijangge emphasized that the families of victims requested that the trial be held at the Timika District Court through a connectivity court. “That will be easier for the victim’s family to witness the trial process directly. The family wants to ensure they get justice from the law enforcement process so they asked for the trial to be held at the Timika District Court,” he said. (*)
