Firearms smuggling hides behind a bride’s dowry

Manokwari, Jubi – West Papua Police Chief Brigadier General Rudolf Albert Rodja stated that the firearms smuggling to Manokwari continues until this day. It seems that many buyers take advantage of a local culture of provides a dowry for brides.

“Sometimes ago, Manokwari Police has seized firearms smuggled by ship. It means customers really exist in Manokwari. Therefore, the police should be aware of it. Although there are a tribe use guns for dowry, they inherit from the world war.

Regarding illegal gun ownership, Jubi recorded that earlier a convicted shooting perpetrator with initial OI who’s a resident of Tanah Rubuh Sub-district, Manokwari, arrested by the police in the mid-2018.

OI is known as a recidivist of illegal weapon ownership who escaped from Manokwari prison in 2012. He then shot his gun and killed a University of Papua student in Kampung Warnyeti, Tanah Rubuh Sub-district in 2014.

After the shooting, he fled to the forest to hide there for three years. Recently, in the mid-2018, a joint team of Manokwari and West Papua Police just caught him. (*)
