Sugapa, Jubi – The Bishop of Jayapura, Msgr. Yanuarius Theofilus Maatopai You, believes that the conflict in Intan Jaya Regency can be resolved through negotiations.

Recently on Thursday, June 22, 2023,  he ordained two new priests in Intan Jaya, Alpius Alpen Mujijau and Domisius Wandi Batoteng Raya, and took the opportunity to visit the area affected by the prolonged conflict in Intan Jaya

After observing the situation firsthand, during the ordination mass at St. Francis Xaverius Titigi Parish on Sunday, the Bishop expressed optimism about finding an agreement among the involved parties, including the Intan Jaya Administration, the pastoral team, the military and police forces, and the West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB).

He emphasized the importance of creating a peaceful environment and urged the acting Regent and government representatives to engage in negotiations with the support of the military and police.

“Intan Jaya is now a separate regency and called for a shift in focus towards infrastructure development and human resources, rather than being consumed by ongoing conflicts,” said Bishop You.

He encouraged the local community to remain in their ancestral land and suggested that the local government seek the assistance of the President of Indonesia to establish a peaceful resolution and ensure the community’s safety. The Bishop sees this as an opportunity for recovery and urges everyone not to give up or retreat from their efforts.

“Let us not retreat, let us not retreat, let us not retreat,” he said.(*)
