Jayapura, Jubi – The Papua Office of the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM Papua) has called upon the Papua Police and the Provincial Government of Mountainous Papua to identify the owner of a mine in the Ei River, Seradala District, Yahukimo Regency, which was targeted by the West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB).

Frits B Ramandey, the head of Komnas HAM Papua, urged both parties to determine the individual or entity employing workers at the mining site.

On October 16, 2023, TPNPB attacked the miners at this location, resulting in the tragic death of seven miners and injuries to seven others. Ramandey suspects the presence of heavy mining equipment at the site suggests the involvement of a businessman.

He emphasized the importance of revealing the entrepreneur behind the mine as a means to regulate mining activities in Yahukimo and the wider Papua region.

“Understanding who cleared the land and brought in civilian workers, and whether the mining operation had the necessary permits are key questions,” he said.

Ramandey also urged caution for those engaged in activities in conflict-prone mining areas. He further called on entrepreneurs involved in infrastructure projects in such areas to consult with local authorities and security forces given the heightened conflict risk.
