Jayapura, Jubi – The Papua Legislative Council believes that stakeholders should work together to address the issue of freedom of expression in Papua. Deputy Chairman III of the Council, Yulianus Rumbairusy, said that various parties have observed a suppression of democratic rights in the easternmost province of Indonesia.

“The silencing of democratic space in Papua, as perceived by some, requires collective attention. This is a problem that demands a joint effort to find a solution,” said Rumbairusy during a meeting between the Council and the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) on Thursday, 22 June 2023.

According to Rumbairusy, it is crucial to document these concerns with the relevant parties. On multiple occasions, when groups of protesters attempted to visit the Council’s Office, they were denied access, leading to members of Council going to the demonstration site to meet the protesters.

“Our security forces, particularly those responsible for maintaining order, must grasp this reality. The Papua Legislative Council has, on several occasions, opened up space for dialogue. Resolving this issue requires collective action,” he emphasized.

Rumbairusy stressed the need for a solution that guarantees freedom of expression in Papua, in order to prevent security forces or the government from being constantly accused of stifling democratic space.

“I believe that due to the suppression of democratic rights, we have unfortunately witnessed casualties. Instances have occurred in Yahukimo and other areas, including Jayapura. Indonesia must ensure the existence of democratic space for individuals to voice their opinions,” he added. (*)
