Jayapura, 5/3 (Jubi) – The National Population and Family Planning Agency (BKBBN) said that the population of Papua province is growing faster than expected.

The head of Papua BKKBN, Nerius Auparai, said in order to strengthen the implementation of the Population, Family Planning and Family Development program in the future, the population projections form will be the basis for policy-making and planning of the various programs based on demographic data.

“Yes, population growth exceeds projections. So, it is important to control population growth and align it with carrying capacity and the environment, ” Auparai said when the opening of the Regional Working Meeting Pre-Program of Population, Family Planning and Family Development on Wednesday (5/3).

According to 2012 Indonesia Demographic and Health Survey (IDHS) Papua’s fertility rate is 3.50, higher than  2.18 percent in 2007. While the percentage of contraception ( CPR) use dropped from 38.3 in 2007 to 21.8  in 2012.

“We have various serious challenges and it is necessary to set an operational acceleration strategy in implementing population, family planning and family development programs , “he said.

He further added it is important to focus on conditions on the ground, particularly at the regency/ city level, improve service providers of family planning, including data, maps of potential hospitals, doctors, midwives and other places as service providers.

“Increasing the capacity of workers on the ground as an effort to accelerate programs including the use of cadres and midwives as extension programs and associated partners, “he said.
Previously, BKKBN Bureau head of Law, Organization and Public Relations, Edi Purwanto said, by the Law No. 52 Year 2009 on population and family development, and its implications for the institutional population and family planning will be implemented by 29 regencies / cities in Papua.

“Implementation of Act No. 52 of 2009 mandates the establishment the National Population and Family Planning at the provincial and regencies / cities levels, “said Purwanto. (Jubi / Arjuna/ Tina)
