Passenger traffic at Sentani Airport drops 1% in November, cargo sees 15% surge

Jayapura, Jubi – The Dortheys Hiyo Eluay Airport, also known as Sentani Airport in Jayapura, Papua, experienced a one percent decline in passenger traffic during November 2023 compared to the previous year.

Stakeholder Relation Manager of the airport, Surya Eka, told Jubi in a WhatsApp message that there were 142,602 passengers in November 2023 as opposed to 143,827 in the same month the prior year.

Looking at the broader scope from January to November 2023, Surya highlighted an 11 percent decrease in served passenger air traffic compared to the previous year. The figures dropped from 1.6 million passengers to 1.4 million passengers during this period. Surya expressed hope for higher numbers in December 2023.

Simultaneously, Surya noted a 15 percent increase in cargo volume at the Dortheys Hiyo Eluay Airport in November 2023, rising from 12,767,543 kilograms to 14,695,266 kilograms compared to the same month in the preceding year.

However, the overall cargo figures from January to November 2023 showed a four percent decrease, totaling 116.4 million kilograms compared to 121.6 million kilograms from the previous year.

Comparatively, in the year 2022, the airport witnessed substantial growth. During 2022, there was a notable surge of 37 percent in passenger traffic, amounting to 1,745,268 passengers, and a 20 percent increase in aircraft movement, reaching 51,347 total movements. Additionally, cargo volumes saw a significant 23 percent increase, climbing from 109 million kilograms to 134 million kilograms during this period. (*)
