Jayapura, Jubi – A woman who was seven months pregnant was reportedly shot dead in Sugapa, the capital of Intan Jaya Regency in Central Papua Provincial, on Thursday (July 2. 2026) night. The victim, identified as Melkiana Duwitau, died along with her unborn chilf.
According to obtained information, the bullet that struck the victim was allegedly fired from the direction of a military post located about 50 metres from her home in the Jaringan (J2) area Sugapa.
Videos circulating online show the victim being rushed to Intan Jaya Regional General Hospital (RSUD) in Sugapa. However, she succumbed to her injuries despite medical treatment.
The incident was also reported by Sebby Sambom, spokesperson for the West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB), in an electronic statement issued on Thursday night.
Sambom said the Papua Intelligence Service (PIS) had reported hearing gunfire from Indonesian military posts in the J2 area, as well as in Bilogai and Wandoga villages in Sugapa District, shortly before victim was found with gunshot wounds.
“The PIS also reported that the shooting was allegedly carried out by Indonesia military personnel from inside the post, targeting civilian homes in central Sugapa, resulting in the death of a pregnant woman and damage to numerous civilian houses,” Sambom said.
The TPNPB National Command called on Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and the Indonesian military to immediately withdraw from residential areas in central Sugapa.
According to Sambom, the move is necessary to reduce the risk of civilian casualties during armed clashes between Indonesian security forces and the TPNPB in Intan Jaya.
Jubi is continuing to seek verification from all relevant parties in Intan Jaya regarding the reported shooting of the pregnant woman. (*)
